Today’s reading Judges 7-8
Judges 8:23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.
Gideon has been used of God to do great things. They come to offer him a position of ruler. He refuses knowing that only God should be their ruler. He answers correctly. This is a beautiful verse.
Then something happens. I suppose that Gideon felt like that he did, after all, deserve something. Maybe what he deserves is just a gift from them. He must think that he should get something out of all he did. He has taken the high road. He has not accepted the greatest honor but what about something for him.
He asks for the earrings. These earrings will be given. He will be glad to have them but they will become a stumbling stone for the entire country. He makes a super mistake here.
I wonder how often I say the humble thing but what the pride thing. I wonder how often I want to be recognized and honored but say something else with my mouth. My heart is far from what my mouth is saying.
That will lead to problems for the people that God allows me to lead and it will lead to temptation and a fall for me.
He is to be king. He is to be recognized. We are not. We should just trust Jesus with the rest of it! God help me to be satisfied with what you give me!
