Today’s reading Exodus 17-20
Exodus 20:25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
When God’s people built an altar He wanted it from the original materials that He made. He didn’t want to see their fine touch and how beautiful they could make it!
I think there might be several things that we want to consider from this verse. The altar was not the focus but the Lord was. They were to focus not on what they could bring and do but on who He is and what He has done! It is easy to get caught up in the mechanics of worship and miss the real purpose of worship.
Our focus is to be on Him and not us! It is not about how it makes us feel. It is not about how much we enjoy it or how beautiful it is but about Him.
Everything about our relationship with God is from Him and what He has done. It is not about what we do but what He has done. It is not about our ability but our accepting His free gift.
We worship focused on His goodness and His person.
If it were about the altar then we could even have a competition about who did the best altar or the most beautiful.
Now we are not to pollute His altar so all we are left to do is focus on Him and not ourselves nor each other!
It is all of grace not works. Quit trying to fix it! Quit trying to make it prettier. Just accept Him for who He is and how He is.
Do not mess with His worship!
