The purpose of the sacrificial system: it was designed to show:

  • The seriousness of sin (Psalm 7:11).

  • That no-one can atone for sin within himself (Revelation 5:2ff.).

  • He must go outside of himself—a sacrifice of an animal.

  • The need for a substitute.

  • Sin was transferred to the animal once the priest put his hands on the animal.

  • The expiation (passing over of sin) was not due to the quality of the person’s life (who is the sinner) but the quality of the sacrifice (which must be perfect).
