Today’s reading Genesis 21-23
Genesis 23:15 My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.
Abraham wants a place to bury his wife. The man is willing to sell him a place to bury her. On simple listening you would get the idea that the man wants to give the land to Abraham. The money is nothing. He uses terms about giving the land several times.
Abraham knows that this is just a way of offering the land and being friendly. Abraham knows that he is to pay the money.
I have experienced this first hand in North Africa. We were offered free camel rides only to find out that as friends we would know that we should pay.
How often do missionaries make cultural mistakes because they have not read the Bible putting themselves back into the culture and seeing what is actually happening.
Read the story carefully. See if you can see a different culture at play here. Then learn to watch for that in all the Scriptures that you read. Learn to study culture where ever God might have you work and witness.
The way they do things is not wrong it is just different.
